Abstract

This standard specifies the method for estimating the probability distribution parameters of uniaxial strength data for fine ceramics characterized by brittle failure.
Note: The failure strength of fine ceramics is treated as a continuous random variable. Under normal circumstances, samples with fixed geometrical dimensions fail under loading, and the load at the time of failure is recorded. The resulting failure stress is used to estimate the parameters related to the overall distribution.
This standard applies to the two-parameter Weibull distribution based on failure strength. Additionally, this standard specifies that the test samples (tension, bending, loading ring, etc.) are subject to uniaxial stress. Sections 6.4 and 6.5 outline methods for correcting the bias in the estimation of Weibull parameters and calculating the confidence intervals of these estimates from data sets where all fractures originate from a single defect population (i.e., a single failure mode). For samples where fractures originate from multiple independent defect populations (e.g., competing failure modes), the bias correction and methods for calculating confidence intervals in Sections 6.4 and 6.5 are not applicable.
