Scope

Scope: This standard specifies the terms and definitions, product classification, technical requirements, testing methods, inspection rules, packaging, storage, transportation, and shelf life of Astragalus. This standard applies to the production, sales, and inspection of Astragalus. Main technical content: Astragalus is the dried root of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao, a legume plant. It is harvested in spring and autumn, with the taproots and root heads removed and then dried in the sun. Astragalus is cylindrical in shape, with some having branches. The upper end is thicker, measuring 30–90 cm in length and 1–3.5 cm in diameter. The surface is light brownish yellow or light brown, with uneven longitudinal wrinkles or grooves. It is hard and resilient, not easy to break, and has a fibrous cross-section with a powdery texture. The bark is yellowish white, and the wood is light yellow, with radial striations and cracks. The center of old roots may occasionally appear decayed, blackish brown, or hollow. It has a faint odor, a slightly sweet taste, and a slight nutty smell when chewed.
