Scope

This standard specifies the performance, design, and structure of the lowering and raising devices for suspended lifeboats, as well as the requirements for their safe maintenance and testing.
This standard applies to lowering and raising devices for suspended lifeboats and suspended rescue boats on all types of marine vessels, including the rapid rescue boat lowering and raising devices on roll-on/roll-off passenger ships, but does not apply to free-falling lifeboat lowering and raising devices. Similar devices on inland waterway vessels can be used as a reference.
