Scope

This document defines the relevant terms and basic concepts of dose instrumentation and equipment calibration for external radiation (especially beta, neutron, and photon radiation) dose measurement, clarifying the measurement quantities of radiation protection dosimeters and dose (rate) meters. It applies to personal dose monitoring, including torso (whole-body) dosimeters and limb dosimeters (including skin and eye lenses), and to site dose monitoring, including portable and fixed dose (rate) meters. This document specifies the calibration requirements for personal and site dose monitoring dosimeters and dose (rate) meters in reference radiation fields, the requirements for the placement of reference points and phantoms for personal dosimeters during calibration, and the methods for determining energy response and angular response. This document is intended for use by calibration laboratories and manufacturers as a reference guide.
