Scope

This standard specifies the structural and performance requirements for magnetic compasses, compass cabinets, and azimuth readers used for navigation and steering. Based on the ship design, two types of compass cabinets are specified. This standard applies to liquid magnetic compasses: -- used for navigation and steering during ship voyages in accordance with relevant regulations; -- equipped with a direct reading system; -- reflective, projection, or transmission type. In this standard, a magnetic compass consists of a directional system supported by a pivot placed in a liquid-filled compass basin, with the pivot supported by gimbals inside and outside the compass basin. This standard includes magnetic compasses without gimbals, and the requirements for gimbals do not apply to such magnetic compasses. This standard applies to: -- all ships subject to the SOLAS Convention (applicable to ships with a gross tonnage of not less than 150 t engaged in ocean voyages, and not applicable to ships with a gross tonnage of not less than 500 t not engaged in ocean voyages) and equipped with Class A magnetic compasses; -- all ships not subject to the SOLAS Convention and equipped with Class A or Class B magnetic compasses; -- lifeboats/life rafts equipped with Class B magnetic compasses (detailed in Appendix H). This standard does not apply to: a) magnetic compasses with dry dials; b) magnetic compasses designed according to principles different from those specified above or not conforming to the given specifications; c) handheld magnetic compasses. The testing and certification of magnetic compasses, their location on board, and deviation adjustment requirements are specified in Appendix G.
