Scope

Main technical content: 7.1 Piglet birth and postnatal care: - After piglets are born, the midwife should immediately clean their nasal and oral mucus, wipe them with a cotton cloth, and tie off the umbilical cord (with the cord length ensuring the piglet can stand without dragging its feet). Disinfect the wound with iodine. - Give the piglets 1–2 drops of gentamicin solution to prevent diarrhea and neonatal enteritis. - If the piglets are intended for breeding, attach ear tags to facilitate individual growth and development tracking. - 7.2 Suckling piglet care: - For piglets showing signs of hypoxia after birth, immediately clean their nasal and oral mucus, lift their hind legs to stimulate them, or support their front and rear limbs with both hands while covering their noses and mouths with gauze for artificial respiration. - Within 2–3 days after birth, assist piglets in fixing their nipples to ensure they consume enough colostrum. Generally, weaker, thinner piglets should nurse from the front nipples, while stronger, heavier piglets should nurse from the rear nipples. Train piglets to form the habit of fixing their nipples to avoid biting and damaging the mother's nipples. - For sows with too many piglets and insufficient nipples, carefully foster piglets from sows with fewer piglets. Select foster sows with a gentle temperament, good maternal instincts, and high lactation capacity. Ensure the foster piglets consume enough colostrum based on their proximity to the delivery date (within 3 days). - Foster piglets should be similar in weight. Place larger piglets from later litters with smaller piglets from earlier litters. Before fostering, apply alcohol to the mother's nose and mouth and the foster piglets to avoid alerting the mother.
