Scope: This document specifies the terms and definitions, initial calf care, suckling calf rearing and management, and key techniques for weaning calf rearing in the Liupanshan region of Ningxia. This document is applicable to the rearing and management of suckling calves in the Liupanshan region of Ningxia; Main technical content: 3. Terms and definitions The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document. 3.1 Calf: A calf less than 6 months old. 3.2 Colostrum: The milk produced by cows within 2-3 days after delivery. 3.3 Milk replacer: A commercial feed product that simulates the nutritional components and functions of milk, replacing maternal milk. 3.4 Starter feeds: A special feed formulated to meet the nutritional needs of early-weaned calves, based on the laws of calf digestion and enzyme secretion. 4. Initial calf care 4.1 Clearing mucus: Immediately remove mucus and foreign objects from the mouth and nose of the calf after birth to ensure normal respiration. Allow the mother cow to lick off the mucus on the calf's body as soon as possible, or use soft dry towels and other items to dry it manually. 4.2 Cord clamping: First, use disinfected scissors to clamp the umbilical cord 6-8 cm away from the calf's navel, squeeze out the umbilical cord blood, and then soak the cut end of the umbilical cord in 5-10% iodine tincture for 1-2 minutes for disinfection. 4.3 Feeding colostrum: Calves should consume 1-2 L of colostrum within 0.5-1.2 hours after birth. For weak calves, assist them in consuming colostrum manually; if the mother cow's milk is insufficient or dies after delivery, let other healthy cows in the same batch breastfeed them. 4.4 Temperature control: Pay attention to maintaining a suitable temperature for newborn calves, with an ideal range of 15-25°C. 5.
