Scope

1.1 This standard specifies the method of determining the acid value of crude oil using potentiometric titration.
1.2 This standard is applicable to the determination of acidic components in crude oil that can be dissolved in a mixed solvent of toluene and isopropanol. The dissociation constant of these acidic components in water should be greater than 10-9; extremely weak acids with a dissociation constant of less than 10-9 do not interfere. Salts with a hydrolysis constant greater than 10-9 will participate in the reaction. The range of acid value determination is 0.1 mg/g to 150 mg/g.
