Scope

This standard specifies a method of using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to analyze the surface roughness of components in gas distribution systems.
This standard is applicable to the characterization of the surface roughness of stainless steel with a Ra value less than 0.25 μm.
This standard is not applicable to steel with a thick oxide layer that cannot produce a tunneling effect.
