Basic Information
Scope
Generally, small ships built from glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) may not reflect radar signals well. In the case of radar being the main observation tool for maritime vessels, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) believes that it is necessary for small ships under 150 GT to be equipped with radar reflectors to enhance their radar echo and thus improve the ship's visibility to radar.
According to the requirements of IMO Resolution MSC.164(78), this part specifies the minimum requirements for radar reflectors, aiming to improve the radar echo of small ships.
This part provides specifications for the structure, performance, testing, inspection, and installation of such radar reflectors.
Note: The requirements excerpted from IMO Resolution MSC.164(78) are printed in italics.
