Scope

This document describes the laboratory testing method for determining the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials. The biodegradation of plastic materials is determined by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide released from plastic materials exposed to seawater collected from coastal areas in a sealed respirometer under laboratory conditions. The conditions described in this document may not be consistent with the optimal conditions for maximum biodegradation. However, this testing method is intended to indicate the potential biodegradability of plastic materials.
