Scope
This standard specifies the protocol requirements for communication between media gateways and media gateway controllers (or softswitch devices) using MGCP, including call models, commands, protocol message formats, protocol transmission requirements, state failure switching and out-of-order situations, protocol security requirements, heartbeat mechanisms, and packets, etc.
This standard applies to media gateways (including IP trunking media gateways, ATM trunking media gateways, integrated access media gateways, integrated access devices, and IP telephony intelligent terminals supporting MGCP), media gateway control devices, and softswitch devices.
