Scope This standard specifies the normative reference documents, terms and definitions, and environmental requirements for growing red beans in Nantong and similar ecological regions. 2. Normative Reference Documents The provisions of the following documents are incorporated by reference into this standard: - GB 4404.3: Standards for Red Bean and Mung Bean Seeds - GB 4285: Standards for the Safe Use of Pesticides - GB/T 8231: Guidelines for the Rational Use of Pesticides - NY 5010: Pesticide-Free Food – Vegetable Production Site Environmental Conditions 3. Terms and Definitions 3.1 The following terms and definitions apply to this standard: - Red bean, also known as small bean, red bean, red mung bean, or red soybean, belongs to the Fabaceae family, Papilionoideae subfamily, and Vicia genus. It is a short-day photoperiod crop. The seeds are oval or cylindrical, with a white hilum and dark red color, hence its name. Red beans are rich in nutrients and are an excellent raw material for processing many staple foods, pastries, snacks, and cold dishes. Traditional Chinese medicine considers red beans to be mild in nature, sweet and sour in taste, and non-toxic. It has the functions of nourishing and strengthening the body, improving digestion, draining excess water and dampness, harmonizing qi and removing pus, clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting lactation, and replenishing blood. 4. Site Environment A well-drained, moderately fertile, and neutral clay loam soil is ideal, with a suitable pH value of 6.3–7.3. The environmental quality of the production site must meet the requirements of NY 5010. 5. Crop Rotation Red beans can be grown as a pure crop or intercropped with corn. After corn harvest, corn stalks can be used as supports for red bean vines. 6.
