Scope

Scope: This document specifies the terms and definitions, preparation of bee colonies, pollination techniques, and environmental requirements for honeybee pollination of thick-skinned melons in Hainan facilities. This document applies to the control requirements for honeybee pollination of thick-skinned melons in Hainan facilities. Main technical content: 4. Pollination bee colony preparation 4.1 Bee species: Chinese honeybee or Italian honeybee and their hybrids, with priority given to Chinese honeybees. 4.2 Bee colony reservation - 45 to 60 days in advance: Growers need to reserve pollination bee colonies from beekeepers. 4.3 Bee colony requirements 4.3.1 Bee colony organization: Organize pollination bee colonies or relocate them to pollination hives 3 days before pollination. The hives should be equipped with sufficient pollen and sugar water. 4.3.2 Pollination bee colonies - Chinese honeybee: 1 healthy queen bee, 1 out-house comb, 1 egg-larva comb, 1 pollen-nectar comb, and 3 combs, with a minimum of 2,000 bees per frame (≥3,000 total). - Italian honeybee: 1 healthy queen bee, 1 out-house comb, 1 egg-larva comb, and 1 pollen-nectar comb, with a minimum of 3,000 bees per frame (≥5,000 total). 5. Pollination techniques 5.1 Bee colony entry time - Place the bee colony in the greenhouse 3 days before the first flowering stage of thick-skinned melons. Open the hive door after 2 hours. 5.2 Pollination area and bee colony number ratio - For large connected greenhouses, place 1 standard pollination bee colony per 1,000 m2 (1.5 mu) of pollination area. 5.3 Bee hive placement 5.3.1 Maintain balance on both sides of the bee hive and position the rear part 1–3 cm higher than the front part. 5.3.2 Place the bee hives evenly across the greenhouse, with the distance to the farthest thick-skinned melon plant no more than 80 meters.
