Scope

This standard specifies the format for transferring scanning probe microscope (SPM) data from one computer to another via parallel or serial interfaces, cables, local area networks, wide area networks, or other communication channels. The transferred data is encoded using characters that appear on ordinary computer monitors or printers. This format is designed for SPM data, such as scanning tunneling microscopes (STM), atomic force microscopes (AFM), and related surface analysis methods that use sharp probes to scan the surface of samples. This format covers data obtained from single-channel imaging, multi-channel imaging, and single-point spectroscopy, and can be extended to two-dimensional spectral imaging in future versions.
