Scope

This standard specifies a method for classifying environmental air particulates using scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) and energy dispersive spectrometers (EDSs). The SEM is used for observing the morphology of individual fine particles in environmental air and conducting qualitative analysis of their elements, while the X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer is used for qualitative analysis of the main elements in the particulates. This standard is applicable to the analysis of particulates that are stable under electron beam bombardment, but not to the analysis of thermally unstable particulates such as nitrates and ammonium salts.
