Scope

This document specifies the general requirements, format structure, and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) descriptions for the vehicle controller area network (CAN) diagnostic communication symbol set.
This document applies to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) standard for road vehicle CAN diagnostic communication, which requires the on-board diagnostic system (OBD) to report the code when a fault is detected.
This document also applies to the decoding of enhanced diagnostic DTCs and reserves bytes for vehicle manufacturer-specific purposes.
The diagnostic trouble code format of this document includes:
a) A standard diagnostic trouble code set and its description contained in SAE J2012-DA; the two most significant bytes of the DTC can be decoded according to two different lists; DTC format identifiers 0016 and 0416;
b) A description of the standard set of diagnostic trouble code subtypes contained in SAE J2012-DA, known as fault types (only applicable to three-byte DTCs).
