Scope

This document defines a biometric identification service for identity assurance, accessed through a service-based framework. It provides a set of common biometric and identity-related functions, along with related data definitions, to enable remote access to the biometric identification service. The binding of the service to a specific framework is beyond the scope of this document, but will be the subject of subsequent sections. Although this document focuses on biometric identification, it is necessary to include support for other related identity assurance mechanisms, such as personal non-biometric and document functions. BIAS is designed to be compatible with and used in conjunction with other biometric standards listed in Chapter 2. The specific requirements for biometric identification functions are limited to remote (back-end) services. The service between client applications and biometric capture devices is beyond the scope of this document. The integration of biometric identification services as part of an authentication service or protocol is beyond the scope of this document. This document applies to the design, development, and application of biometric identity assurance service systems accessed through a service-based framework.
