Scope
This document describes an automated method of measuring the total surface density of various water-soluble salts on the steel surface before painting dedicated seawater ballast tanks, bulk carriers, and oil tankers, as well as crude oil tank cargo tanks in accordance with PSPC requirements. The PSPC requirements come from IMO Resolutions MSC.215(82), MSC.244(83), and MSC.288(87). This method determines the total concentration of water-soluble ionic contaminants through conductivity testing, allowing for a rapid assessment of whether there is ionic contamination on the steel surface. The measurement results of this method can be equivalent to GB/T 18570.9-2005. Note 1: This method cannot determine the individual surface densities of chlorides, sulfates, etc. This method only evaluates ionic contaminants. Ionic contaminants account for the vast majority of contaminants, so ionic contaminants are considered a single contaminant. Note 2: As stated in the PSPC footnote, when it is proven to comply with NACESP 0508-2010, this method can be used as an alternative measurement method for PSPC, applicable to seawater ballast tanks of all types of ships, as well as related compartments of bulk carriers and cargo oil tanks.
