This standard defines merchant category codes. This standard classifies merchants into certain categories based on their business types. These codes only specify the merchant categories that may engage in financial retail business. This standard stipulates the registration and maintenance mechanisms for national-reserved and industry-reserved codes for merchant category codes. How to use merchant category codes is not within the scope of this standard.
