Scope

Scope: This document specifies the pruning types, basic requirements, pruning methods, and post-pruning protection for greenhouse tomato production in Hebei Province. This document applies to pruning techniques for greenhouse tomato production in Hebei Province. Main technical content: 4. Pruning methods: - Single-stem pruning: Suitable for large- and medium-sized tomato cultivation. All side branches are removed, leaving only one main stem to grow. - Double-stem pruning: Suitable for cherry tomato cultivation. In addition to the main stem, the first strong side branch growing from the leaf axil below the first inflorescence is selected at the base of the main stem and allowed to grow simultaneously with the main stem. All other side branches are removed, leaving two main stems to grow. 5. Basic requirements: - Timely remove side branches sprouting at the base of tomato stems. Remove weak seedlings' side branches early, and prune vigorous plants appropriately later. - Timely remove pre-flowering branches. - Do not prune on cloudy days; - Do not prune within two days before or after irrigation; - Do not prune during winter and spring when leaves are dewy; - Prune in the afternoon during summer and autumn. - Separately prune diseased plants after finishing healthy ones. - Wash hands before pruning and prepare portable tools for collecting pruned branches. 6. Pruning methods: - Remove side branches by pinching and shaking them off at the base. - Remove suckers without leaving stumps to avoid damaging the main stem's bark. - Remove top buds when tomato inflorescences meet the required standards. For winter-spring crops (autumn-winter crops), retain 8-10 inflorescences per main stem; on sunny days, retain 2-3 leaves above the top inflorescence after harvesting. - Remove bottom leaves after the first inflorescence sets on seedling plants.
