Basic Information
Scope
This standard specifies the general requirements for the structure and performance, type testing, and individual inspection of marine electromagnetic compasses used for steering and directional determination in accordance with the requirements of Chapter V of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) and the International High-Speed Craft Safety Code (HSC Code). The electromagnetic compasses specified in this standard are applicable to ships with an overall length of not less than 24 m. An electromagnetic compass is an electronic device that uses the Earth's magnetic field to obtain ship heading information, which is then transmitted to the main compass used for steering and directional determination, the repeater attached to the main compass, and other necessary navigation equipment.
