Scope

This document specifies the performance and testing requirements related to radiation measurement for backpack-type radiation detectors (BRDs), as well as electrical, mechanical, and environmental conditions. This document applies to backpack-type radiation detectors (BRDs) used to detect the illegal trafficking of radioactive materials. Note: BRDs are portable instruments designed for portable use and can also be used independently as temporary area monitors. BRDs are used to detect gamma radiation, and their functions may also include neutron detection and/or the identification of gamma-ray nuclides.
