Scope

This standard specifies the method of testing the Balling toughness of hard alloys and metal ceramics at room temperature using the indentation method.
This standard is applicable to testing the Balling toughness of metal-bonded carbides and carbon nitrides (commonly known as hard alloys or metal ceramics). The Balling toughness is calculated by measuring the total length of cracks emanating from the vertices of Vickers hardness indentations. The test process proposed in this standard is typically conducted at room temperature, but it can be extended to high or low temperatures if agreed upon.
The test process proposed in this standard is carried out in a normal laboratory air environment; it is not intended to be conducted in corrosive environments (such as strong acids or seawater environments).
