Scope

This standard specifies the functional block characteristics of synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) equipment. The general diagram of the functional blocks of SDH equipment is shown in Figure 1.
The functional definitions in this standard apply to the user network interface (UNI) and network node interface (NNI) of SDH.
This standard applies to transmission network equipment. Not all functional blocks defined in this standard are necessary for every application. Different subsets of functional blocks in this standard can be selected and combined in different ways to provide different device functions according to the combination rules given in this standard. Network operators and equipment manufacturers can choose which functions are needed to implement a certain application.
