Scope

This document aims to provide guidance for the design, installation, and operational testing of voyage data recorders (VDRs) in accordance with the provisions of IMO Resolution MSC.333(90) and IEC 61996-1. It primarily addresses the interface between the VDR and external sensors, serving as the main technical agreement between users, shipyards, VDR suppliers, and/or sensor manufacturers during planning for installation. It also describes performance testing and playback issues, and further sets out detailed requirements for inspections related to interfaces and installations. This document does not apply to performance factors and functional requirements related to VDRs.
When it is necessary to fully or partially replace an existing simple VDR (S-VDR), this document should provide installation guidance for the device in accordance with the requirements of IMO Resolution MSC.163(78) and IEC 61996-2.
