Scope

Scope: This document specifies the terminology and definitions, technical requirements, and precautions for the rearing and management of beef calves in beef cattle farms and professional cooperatives (parks). Applicability: This document is applicable to the rearing and management of beef calves in beef cattle farms and professional cooperatives (parks). Main technical content: 4. Technical requirements 4.1 Calve rearing 4.1.1 Neonatal care: Immediately wipe off the mucus around the nose and lips with a dry towel or gauze (mucus removal) after calving; remove the soft tissue on the sole of the calve's hooves (hoof removal). 4.1.2 Umbilical cord clamping: Cut the umbilical cord at a distance of 8cm to 10cm from the abdomen and disinfect it with 5% to 10% iodine tincture. Generally, no need for ligature; the umbilical cord can be wrapped up with disinfected gauze. 4.1.3 Colostrum feeding 4.1.3.1 Natural feeding: Assist the calve with colostrum feeding within 0.5h to 2h after birth. 4.1.3.2 Artificial feeding: Colostrum feeding amount: The first feeding is 1.5kg to 2.0kg, followed by a second feeding 6 to 8 hours later, with three daily feedings. The second and third feedings are each about 1.5kg. From the second to fifth days, feed the calve according to 1/8 to 1/10 of its body weight. Maintain the colostrum temperature at 37°C to 38°C. 4.1.4 Mature milk feeding 4.1.4.1 Mother-led feeding: The calve follows its mother for 3 to 6 months of lactation. 4.1.4.2 Nanny cow feeding: When the mother is unable to breastfeed, a nanny cow can be used to feed 2 to 3 calves born around the same time until weaning. 4.1.4.3 Artificial feeding: Feed the calve according to 1/10 of its body weight. Maintain the milk temperature at 38°C to 39°C and ensure regular and quantitative feeding. Alternatively, follow the 90-day artificial feeding program (see Table 1).
