GB/T 42539-2023 Rolling bearings—Ceramic bearings balls—Determination of the strength by notched ball test
Basic Information
Scope
This document specifies the method for determining the strength of finished ceramic balls for bearings with a diameter of 3 mm to 50 mm. Ceramic balls are preferably made of silicon nitride (Si3N4).
Note 1: The requirements for silicon nitride material of pretreated ceramic balls are given in ISO 26602. The requirements for finished silicon nitride ceramic balls are given in ISO 3290-2.
Note 2: Other methods for determining the strength of ceramic balls can be found in the references.
The Poisson's ratio has a slight impact on the results of the strength test. Therefore, when calculating, including the typical silicon nitride ceramics used as bearing rolling bodies, the Poisson's ratio of the materials used ranges from 0.15 to 0.35.
This test can also be used for ceramic balls made of other ceramic materials, but the pre-factors in this document may not be applicable.
Note 3: ISO 17561 gives a method for determining the Poisson's ratio of isotropic materials.
Due to the brittle fracture of ceramic materials (influenced by defects), the test results of a group of nominally identical samples may vary significantly.
Note 4: ISO 20501 gives further methods for statistical analysis.
