Scope

Scope: This standard specifies the terms and definitions, reagents and solutions, instruments and equipment, measurement steps, and requirements for repeatability in the determination of the carbohydrate balance index in total mixed rations for ruminants. This standard applies to the determination of the carbohydrate balance index in total mixed rations for ruminants. Main technical content: The measurement steps include sample collection, sample processing, determination of neutral detergent fiber content, determination of physical effective factors, and determination of ruminal degradable starch. The measurement indicators and related formulas of this standard are as follows: - pef4.0 = the sum of the dry matter mass of feed particles retained on 19.0 mm, 8.0 mm, and 4.0 mm sieves divided by the total dry matter mass of the sieve sample. - pef8.0 = the sum of the dry matter mass of feed particles retained on 19.0 mm and 8.0 mm sieves divided by the total dry matter mass of the sieve sample. Formulas: - pef4.0 = (DM19.0 mm + DM8.0 mm + DM4.0 mm) ÷ DMt - pef8.0 = (DM19.0 mm + DM8.0 mm) ÷ DMt Where: - DM19.0 mm is the dry matter mass of feed particles retained on a 19.0 mm sieve, in grams (g). - DM8.0 mm is the dry matter mass of feed particles retained on an 8.0 mm sieve, in grams (g). - DM4.0 mm is the dry matter mass of feed particles retained on a 4.0 mm sieve, in grams (g). - DMt is the total dry matter mass of the sieve sample, in grams (g). - peNDF4.0 = the product of the NDF content of the roughage or diet and pef4.0. - peNDF4.0 = NDF × pef4.0 - peNDF8.0 = NDF × pef8.0 Where: - NDF is the neutral detergent fiber content of the roughage or diet. - The starch content is calculated using the acid consumption of the feed, total optical rotation, and the optical rotation of the ethanol solubles. - W = 20000 ÷ αD20 × (2.5α1 ÷ m1 - 5α2 ÷ m2) Where: - W is the starch content in the sample, in grams per kilogram (g/kg). - α1 is the measured total optical rotation
