Scope
This document describes the method of calibrating the detection efficiency of condensation nuclei particle counters (CPCs) when the particle number concentration ranges from 1 cm-3 to 105 cm-3, and its associated measurement uncertainties. Generally, the detection efficiency will depend on the particle number concentration, particle size, and composition. The calibration method described in this document covers a particle size range of approximately 5 nm to 1,000 nm.
These methods can be used to determine the CPC calibration factor when the detection efficiency is relatively constant (stable efficiency) over a large particle size range, and to characterize the lower limit of the CPC detection efficiency when the particle size is smaller. For more detailed parameters, see Appendix A.
This document is applicable to the calibration of CPCs with an air intake flow rate of 0.1 L/min to 5 L/min.
