Basic Information
Scope
Main Technical Content: 3 Terms and Definitions The following terms and definitions apply to this document. Breeding in the same breed involves measures such as selection and mating, line breeding, and improving breeding conditions to enhance the production performance of the breed and overcome its shortcomings, with the aim of maintaining breed purity and improving overall breed quality. Phenotypic selection involves comprehensive evaluation and comparative selection based on the identification and production performance assessment of Weili Rob sheep. Individuals meeting breed standards are used for breeding. A core group is a group of outstanding individuals directly involved in breeding and evaluation. 4 Breeding Technology Foundation The flock should have distinct breed characteristics and a genetic basis for achieving breeding goals. The maternal breed (line) focuses on reproductive performance and wool production, while the paternal breed (line) emphasizes growth performance and wool production. The phenotypic values of the main economic traits of individuals in the breeding foundation flock should exceed the group average by one standard deviation. The individuals in the breeding foundation flock should be robust, have clear pedigrees, and meet the requirements for bloodline quantity. Genetic disorders should be promptly eliminated during breeding. Selection of breeding sheep should be based on their phenotypic characteristics such as body shape, weight, body measurements, and wool quality. The number of sheep participating in the breeding flock should be determined according to the breeding program, selection intensity, and implementation conditions. The breeding flock typically includes at least 40 ewes, while the replacement breeding flock should consist of 6 unrelated rams and 120–140 ewes. Key production traits of the breeding flock should be measured, and a system for estimating quality traits and comprehensive breeding values should b
