Scope

Scope: This standard specifies the terms and definitions of animal welfare for waterfowl (ducks, geese, and mallards), including the sources of chicks, feeding and watering, farming environment, husbandry management, health, transportation, humane slaughter, feather plucking, processing, and basic requirements for record-keeping and traceability. This standard applies to the entire process of animal welfare management for waterfowl during farming, transportation, slaughter, feather plucking, and processing. Main technical content: This standard consists of terms and definitions, chicks, feeding and watering, farming environment, husbandry management, health, transportation, humane slaughter, feather plucking, and record-keeping and traceability. In the section on chicks, requirements are set for the sources and disposal of chicks. In the section on feeding and watering, requirements are set for feed, feeding, and watering. In the section on farming environment, requirements are set for poultry houses, egg-laying equipment, flooring and mesh beds, lighting, temperature and humidity, ventilation, environmental enrichment, husbandry space, and outdoor areas for free-range poultry. In the section on husbandry management, requirements are set for managers, farm workers, daily management, and protecting animals from harm caused by other animals. In the section on health, requirements are set for health plans, non-therapeutic surgeries, safe disposal/culling, drug treatment, and biosecurity. In the section on transportation, requirements are set for capture and loading, and transportation management. In the section on humane slaughter, requirements are set for training, health monitoring, waiting pens, stunning, and bleeding. In the section on feather plucking, requirements are set for the feather plucking process.
