This document applies to capacitors used in power electronics applications. The systems using these capacitors typically operate at frequencies below 15 kHz, while the pulse frequency may reach 5 to 10 times the operating frequency. This document classifies capacitors installed in housings as AC capacitors and DC capacitors. It covers a wide range of capacitor technologies and their various applications, such as overvoltage protection, DC and filtering, switching circuits, energy storage, and auxiliary converters. This document does not apply to: -- Capacitors for induction heating devices operating at frequencies below 50 kHz (see IEC 601101 and IEC 601102); -- Capacitors for motors and similar applications (see IEC 602521 and IEC 602522); -- Capacitors used in circuits to block one or more harmonics in the power grid; -- Small AC capacitors for fluorescent lamps and discharge lamps (see IEC 61048 and IEC 61049); -- Capacitors for suppressing radio interference (see IEC 6038414); -- Parallel capacitors for AC power systems with a nominal voltage above 1,000 V (see IEC 608711 and IEC TS 608712); -- Self-healing parallel capacitors for AC power systems with a nominal voltage of 1,000 V or less (see IEC 608311 and IEC 608312); -- Non-self-healing parallel capacitors for AC power systems with a nominal voltage of 1,000 V or less (see IEC 609311 and IEC 609312); -- Electronic capacitors not used in power circuits; -- Series capacitors for power systems (see IEC 60143); -- Coupling capacitors and capacitive dividers (see IEC 603581); -- Microwave oven capacitors (see IEC 612701); -- Capacitors for rail transportation. Application examples are provided in Section 9.1.
