This document describes metadata in the form of a catalog, which are applicable to the process of resource acquisition, resource description, cataloging, retrieval, borrowing, or copying by end users or institutions.
This document includes data elements that are exchanged or potentially exchanged in bibliographic systems, excluding data elements that are not exchanged or cannot be exchanged, as well as data elements processed by transmission protocols. It only includes data elements related to application-level protocols.
As part of the integration phase, this document generally classifies data elements into categories and subcategories, presenting them in two orders: one by category and subcategory, and the other by pinyin alphabetical order. The pinyin alphabetical sorting method includes examples and synonyms identified during the integration phase and found in relevant exchange protocols and models.
Since the grouping of data elements may vary across different protocols and record models, although the data elements have been generally classified and grouped, no further framework has been created. Similarly, the order of data elements, whether a particular data element is mandatory, and how it is formed and validated may vary according to its specific application, so these data element attributes are beyond the scope of this document.
As new interoperability methods develop, some new data elements will continue to emerge, but the greatest changes typically occur in the way existing data elements are grouped. For example, regardless of whether the procurement transaction is conducted manually or electronically, the basic data elements of the transaction — the requester, the supplier, and the object of the procurement — remain the same.
