This document specifies the requirements and test methods for assessing the flame retardancy of integrated or separate components of wheelchairs and/or positioning support devices intended to protect tissue integrity when exposed to a heat source equivalent to a smoldering cigarette. Electronic ignition can also simulate other potential environmental fire hazards.
This document only tests the flame retardancy of the samples under test, not the entire wheelchair. This document provides guidance on flame retardancy, but cannot guarantee the flame retardancy of the assembled wheelchair.
This document does not apply to the flame retardancy of structural components of wheelchairs. This document does not include changes in flame retardancy caused by the use or regular cleaning of positioning support devices.
This document does not apply to risk control arising from electrical or electronic components.
This document allows separate testing of wheelchair components typically used on horizontal surfaces (e.g., seat cushions) and components typically used on vertical surfaces (e.g., backrests).
This document describes the testing of removable, composite-material-assembled components. This document describes the testing of test components using composite materials. The results of this document do not provide the individual flame retardancy of any individual material in the test samples.
Note: The purpose of this document is primarily to address components that come into contact with the human body (such as seat cushions, which are used to position or protect skin tissue to avoid related injuries caused by pressure, shear force, and immersion) and positioning support devices made of textile materials, foam materials, and plastic-based materials.
