This document describes the methods for determining the degradation of plastics caused by the action of fungi, bacteria, and soil microorganisms. This document does not address the biodegradability of plastics or the degradation of natural fiber composites. The type and extent of degradation can be determined by one or more of the following methods: a) Visual inspection; b) Changes in mass; c) Changes in other physical properties. This document is applicable to plastics with a smooth surface that are easy to clean. Porous materials, such as plastic foams, are excluded. This document uses the same test fungi as IEC 60068-2-10. In IEC 60068-2-10, the "assembled sample" requires the sample to be inoculated with a spore suspension and cultured to evaluate the growth of fungi and their structural damage to the sample. The test strains and test quantities used depend on the intended application of the plastic.
