This document describes an overview of various test methods used to determine the surface flame spread of electrical and electronic products or the materials used in them. The test methods presented in this document represent the current technical level, and where appropriate, the relevance and application of these test methods are specifically explained. This document cannot replace the standards that have been published and serve as the only valid reference documents. This document is intended for use by product committees when preparing standards in accordance with the principles set out in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. One of the tasks of product committees is to use this series of standards wherever applicable when preparing standards in this field. Unless the relevant standards specifically mention or list non-applicability, the requirements, test methods, or test conditions of this document will apply.
