This document specifies the models required for describing geographic information and its services using metadata, and provides information on the identification, coverage, quality, spatial and temporal patterns, content, spatial reference, pictorial expression, distribution, and other characteristics of digital geographic data and services.
This document defines:
—— Mandatory and conditionally mandatory subsets of metadata, metadata entities, and metadata elements;
—— The minimum set of metadata required to serve most metadata applications (data discovery, determining the suitability of data, data access, data transfer, and the application of digital data and services);
—— Optional metadata elements to enable a more comprehensive standardized description of resources when needed;
—— Methods for extending metadata to meet special needs.
This document applies to:
—— Various types of resource cataloging, data exchange, and comprehensive descriptions of datasets and services;
—— Geographic services, geographic datasets, dataset series, and individual geographic features and feature characteristics.
Although this document applies to digital data and services, its principles can be extended to many other types of resources, such as maps, charts, text files, and non-geographic data. Some conditionally mandatory metadata elements may not be applicable to these other forms of data.
