The standard specifies the requirements for the grade of negative (oxygen) ion concentrations in urban forests. (1) Terms and Definitions This chapter mainly defines urban forests, negative (oxygen) ion concentrations in urban forests, and ion mobility. In 1965, Erik Jorgenson of the University of Toronto in Canada proposed the concept of urban forests, which subsequently developed rapidly in the United States and further evolved in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. In China, this concept was introduced into China in 1989, and Shanghai was the first to carry out related practices of urban forests in 2002. Based on existing literature, urban forests are defined as an ecosystem composed of vegetation dominated by trees and the human and natural environments in which they are located within the urban area, with a near-natural forest ecosystem as the main component. Its scope covers the urban area, including built-up areas, suburban areas, and remote suburban areas; its functional positioning is to improve the urban ecological environment, serve the city and people, and provide residents with ecological products and services; its constituent components are mainly trees, including human and natural environments; and its development direction is towards a near-natural forest ecosystem.
