Scope

This document describes a test method for determining the extent and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials on marine sandy sediments at the interface between seawater and the seabed by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide released. This test method is also applicable to other solid organic materials.
This test method simulates the habitat environment of different seawater and sediment areas in the ocean under laboratory conditions, such as the benthic zone (light zone) where sunlight shines on the seabed, which is known as the nearshore zone in marine science.
The determination of the biodegradation of plastic materials and other solid materials buried in marine sediments is not within the scope of this document.
Note: The determination of aerobic biodegradation can also be obtained by monitoring the consumption of oxygen, and the method is described in GB/T 40611-2021.
The conditions described in this document may not be consistent with the optimal conditions for maximum biodegradation.
