Scope

This standard specifies a method for evaluating the anaerobic biodegradability of plastics in controlled sludge anaerobic digestion systems, where the solids content of the system is not greater than 15%. Such systems are commonly found in sludge and wastewater treatment plants, livestock manure treatment facilities, or waste disposal sites. The method aims to determine the conversion rate of organic carbon in the material into biogases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4).
Under the condition that the carbon content is known, the method is applicable to the following materials:
—— Natural and/or synthetic polymers, copolymers, or their mixtures;
—— Resins containing plasticizers, colorants, or other compounds;
—— Water-soluble polymers.
This standard is not applicable to materials that have an inhibitory effect on experimental microorganisms at the test concentration.
Note: The inhibitory effect can be determined by an inhibition test (e.g., ISO 13641-1 or ISO 13641-2).
