This document is applicable to the classification of commercial magnetic materials. The term "magnetic materials" refers to substances that are required to be ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic in applications. In this document, the classification of magnetic materials is based on two main product categories that are widely recognized: -- Soft magnetic materials (coercivity ≤ 1,000 A/m); -- Permanent (hard) magnetic materials (coercivity > 1,000 A/m). Within these main categories, when the classification is reasonable, the following characteristics can be identified: -- The main alloying elements, metallurgical states, and physical properties of the materials; -- When possible and convenient, the interrelationships between these characteristics can also be identified. Classification by specific application fields cannot be applied to all materials, because different materials can often be used for the same purposes according to the characteristics required by the application.
