This document specifies the general structure of distributed industrial process measurement and control systems (IPMCS) and provides guidelines for the use of function blocks. This structure is presented according to achievable reference models, textual syntax, and graphical representations. These models, representations, and syntax are applicable to:
● Specification and standardization of function block types;
● Functional specification and standardization of system elements;
● Specification, analysis, and verification of distributed IPMCS independent of implementation;
● Configuration, implementation, operation, and maintenance of distributed IPMCS;
● Information exchange between software tools implementing the above functions.
This document does not limit or specify the functionality of IPMCS or their system elements, unless a particular function requires elements defined in this document to be represented. IEC 61499-4 states the extent to which the elements defined in this document may be subject to functional restrictions by consistency systems, subsystems, and devices.
One of the purposes of this document is to provide a reference model for the use of function blocks in other standards supporting the system lifecycle. The system lifecycle includes system planning, design, implementation, verification, operation, and maintenance. The models presented in this document are generic, independent of industry domains, and can be extended to function block definitions and use in other standards, specific applications, or application domains. The aim is to develop concise, achievable, clear, and consistent specifications in accordance with the rules set out in this document.
