Abstract

The implementation guide for the concept of the "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement" (hereinafter referred to as GUM) proposed in this document is applicable to the calibration of measurement standards and measurement equipment in the GPS field and the measurement of GPS characteristics of workpieces in the industrial sector. Its purpose is to provide all the information needed to complete an uncertainty report and to provide a basis for comparing the measured results and their uncertainties (the relationship between customers and suppliers).
The purpose of this document is to support ISO 14253-1. Both this document and ISO 14253-1 are conducive to the interpretation of GPS specifications (i.e., the tolerances of workpiece characteristics and the maximum permissible errors (MPEs) of the measurement equipment's metrological characteristics) by all technical departments within a company.
The uncertainty management procedure (Procedure for Uncertainty M Anagement—PUMA) introduced in this document is a practical iterative procedure for evaluating measurement uncertainties based on GUM without changing the basic concepts of GUM. It is generally used to evaluate measurement uncertainties and provide uncertainty statements in the following cases:
——a single measured result;
——the comparison of two or more measured results;
——the comparison of the measured results obtained from one (or more) workpieces or one (or more) measurement devices with a given specification (i.e., the maximum permissible errors (MPEs) of the measurement instrument or measurement standard's metrological characteristics, or the tolerance limits of workpiece characteristics, etc.) to verify whether they meet the specification.
The iterative method is generally based on the upper limit evaluation strategy, that is, overestimating the uncertainty at each stage of the uncertainty evaluation and controlling the amount of overestimation through iteratio
