Abstract
This document stipulates the basic principles and technologies for providing the minimum security measures necessary for effective personal identification number (PIN) management. These measures apply to institutions responsible for implementing PIN management and protection technologies, including PIN creation, issuance, use, and deactivation. This document is applicable to managing cardholder PINs used to verify cardholders in retail banking systems, particularly in automated teller machine (ATM) systems, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, self-service gasoline dispensers, vending machines, bank kiosks, and PIN selection/change systems. This document is also applicable to card-issuing institutions and switching systems.
