This document describes the measurement methods for the following currents: -- DC current or sinusoidal or non-sinusoidal AC current flowing through the human body, and -- current flowing through protective conductors. The recommended method for measuring contact current is based on the potential effects of current flowing through the human body. In this document, the measurement of current flowing through the measurement network (representing human impedance) refers to the measurement of contact current. These networks may not necessarily be effective for animals. The specific limit values and their meanings are beyond the scope of this document. IEC 60479 (all parts) provides information on the effects of current passing through the human body, based on which current limits can be determined. This document applies to all types of equipment defined in IEC 61140. The measurement methods in this document do not consider the following cases: -- contact current with a duration of less than 1 second; -- patient current specified in IEC 606011; -- AC current with a frequency lower than 15 Hz; -- current exceeding the selected electrical burn limit values. This basic safety standard is primarily intended for use by technical committees in developing standards in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. Manufacturers or certification bodies cannot use this document independently of product standards. Technical committees should use basic safety standards when developing standards. The requirements for test methods and test conditions in this document only apply when specifically referenced or specified in relevant standards.
