This standard applies to equipment that detects gamma radiation and/or neutrons generated by a criticality accident and issues an alarm.
This standard is primarily used for the design of equipment and does not address the deployment requirements of such equipment. The deployment requirements and usage methods of criticality alarm equipment are described in ISO 7753 and ISO 11320.
The main purpose of criticality alarm equipment is to detect radiation generated by a criticality accident and warn personnel. The equipment should provide an appropriate alarm to alert personnel in the criticality accident area and nearby affected areas (usually the entire nuclear facility) when a criticality accident occurs. The purpose of this alarm is to trigger an evacuation alarm and reduce the likelihood of serious radiation exposure to personnel.
The equipment may also have auxiliary functions, such as continuous measurement of radiation levels during an accident. These auxiliary functions may only be used if they do not affect the criticality alarm and the important characteristics described in this standard (e.g., reliability).
The objective of this standard is to specify general characteristics, radiation detection, environmental, mechanical, electromagnetic compatibility, and documentation requirements, and to establish acceptance criteria for criticality accident alarm devices.
This standard does not apply to photon or neutron dose equivalent (rate) measuring instruments or monitors, which are specified in IEC 60532, IEC 60846 (all parts), IEC 61017 (all parts), and IEC 61005. This standard also does not apply to equipment and components of nuclear reactor control and safety systems.
