Abstract

This document describes four methods for quantitatively determining the solvent extracts of raw rubber (including natural raw rubber and synthetic raw rubber). Methods A and B are also applicable to uncured rubber and vulcanized rubber.
Method A measures the ratio of the mass of the solvent extract after evaporation to the mass of the original sample.
Method B measures the change in mass of the rubber sample before and after extraction.
Method C extracts the sample in boiling solvent and measures the change in mass of the rubber sample before and after extraction. This method is only applicable to raw rubber.
Method D measures the ratio of the change in mass of the rubber sample before and after extraction to the mass of the original sample. This method is only applicable to raw rubber.
Note 1: Test results may vary due to differences in test methods, test conditions, and reagents used.
Note 2: Under normal circumstances, based on the content and characteristics of the extractable substances and diffusion equilibrium, the test results of Method C are lower than those of Methods A and B (especially when the sample mass is large). However, Method C takes less time to test than Methods A and B.
Note 3: Methods C and D are not applicable to samples that decompose during extraction.
Note 4: Method D is typically used for product control.
Appendix A recommends the most suitable extraction solvents for each type of rubber.
