Abstract

This standard provides general guidelines for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission based on voltage-sourced converters (VSCs). The converters described in this standard are self-commutated voltage-sourced converters based on semiconductor devices that can be controlled to turn on and off (including capacitive energy storage media that maintain the polarity of the DC voltage).
This standard applies to two-level and three-level pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters and multi-level converters, excluding two-level and three-level converters that use square-wave output mode instead of PWM.
High-voltage direct current transmission based on voltage-sourced converters is referred to as "VSC DC transmission" (also known as "flexible DC transmission").
This standard describes different types of circuit topologies for VSC transmission, as well as their basic operating characteristics and typical applications. The main purpose is to assist owners in determining VSC transmission solutions.
High-voltage direct current transmission based on grid-commutated current-sourced converters is not included in this standard.
