This standard specifies the technical requirements for shipborne automatic identification systems (AIS) using time division multiple access (TDMA) in the very high frequency (VHF) maritime mobile band, including:

——AIS channel management via DSC messages;
——Remote applications;
——Application-specific messages;
——Transmission packet sequencing;
——Class B AIS using CSTDMA technology;
——AIS messages;
——Requirements for the use of pulse transmission base stations.
This standard applies to the design, production, use, and management of shipborne automatic identification systems and related station equipment.
